WITH the aim of providing quality competition for the city’s clubs, the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) for the fifth consecutive year has partnered with the New Building Society (NBS).Yesterday, the two entities officially launched the GCA-sponsored NBS 40-over Second-Division competition that will target 15 city teams, at the financial institution’s location on North Road and Avenue of the Republic.
The tournament is scheduled to bowl off on Saturday, and as was the case last year, the competition will be played on a league basis where points will be allocated.
Like in the previous year, the GCA will again place much emphasis on developing fast bowlers. According to Chairman of the GCA’s Competitions Committee, Shawn Massiah, at least 40 per cent of the overs in the game must be bowled by fast bowlers as stated in the playing regulations.
The tournament will be divided into two Zones and the teams listed to participate are: defending champions Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), Everest Cricket Club, Sophia, Diplomats, Police, Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Third Class, Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Transport Sports Club (TSC), Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC), Muslim Youth Organisation, Gandhi Youth Organisation, University of Guyana, Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) and Ace Warriors.
St Stanislaus College will not participate in the competition this year, due to unforeseen circumstances.
Meanwhile, NBS Chairman Floyd McDonald, in his remarks said that the organisation was pleased to be associated with this tournament for the fifth consecutive year, since, according to him, sports plays an integral part of nation-building.
“We at NBS consider sports in general to be a very important aspects in the lives, especially the young persons in our country, and we think that it is appropriate that we should contribute in a meaningful way to the development of sports in Guyana, particularly cricket.
McDonald pointed out, that while the game locally has been faced with some challenges, the financial institution will continue to play positive roles in promoting the game throughout the country.
The chairman commended the GCA for the initiative taken, regarding the development of fast bowlers.
He urged the GCA to take the necessary steps to develop the game in general, despite the difficulties with the management or administration of the game at certain levels.
McDonald believes that cricket is here to stay and the game will blossom as the years progress.
GCA president Roger Harper thanked the NBS for so willingly continuing the partnership with the Association in running this tournament and investing in youths.
Harper, a former West Indies vice-captain, noted that the GCA was focused on the development of young cricketers and also in taking the game to a higher level.
Harper, the Guyana Amazon Warriors head coach, explained that the competition was not only an opportunity for the players to showcase their talent, but also serves as further development for the youths.
He explained that last year the tournament has produced 12 players who have represented Guyana at the various youth levels, and out of the 12, one (Tevin Imlach) represented the West Indies at the ICC Youth World Cup earlier this year in Bangladesh.
Harper assured that the tournament will be run at the highest standard and the GCA’s commitment to the NBS will be fulfilled.
