..DCC uplifts winner’s trophy and cheque
CHAIRMAN of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Competitions Committee Shaun Massiah, last Friday night asked clubs within the GCA jurisdiction, to make their grounds available for the playing of hardball cricket.Massiah made this plea, during the GCA’s presentation ceremony held at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) pavilion, which saw the victorious Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) led by West Indies T20 all-rounder Christopher Barnwell uplifting the GCA/Hadi’s Mall Inc. first division two day trophy.
While congratulating DCC on coming out victorious, even though they came from behind to do so, Massiah related that the unavailability of the grounds has been preventing the GCA from completing their tournaments in a timely manner.
“The GCA would have been grateful to receive the sponsorship from Hadi’s Mall for the first division competition for cricketers in Georgetown, while we had some coming from across the country to represent some of the clubs.
We have seen players such as Leon Johnson, Christopher Barnwell, Trevon Griffith, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Winston Forrester, Zaheer Mohammed and Paul Wintz, just to name a few, all making strides in this tournament, with Johnson going on to represent the West Indies ‘A’ team in India,” said Massiah.
He added, “However, while a prolonged and unexpected rainy season hampered the smooth flow of this tournament, one major problem we at the GCA faced was the availability of grounds, so I am pleading with the clubs to make their grounds available for the playing of hard ball cricket in Georgetown since it benefits all of us in the long run, as some of our players go on to play for Demerara and later Guyana.”
In giving his overview of the 2012-2013 tournament, Massiah, who also don uniform for Transport Sports Club, said it was contested amongst nine first division clubs, with DCC who chalked up 136 points, coming out on top over GCC who aggregated 132 points, with Guyana National Industrial Corporation third.
“It was a close and competitive competition despite the long and unexpected rainy season, which lasted from May to August. Congrats to DCC for the win, while I wish to remind clubs that we are looking to start the 2013-2014 tournament this weekend, weather and grounds permitting,” stated Massiah.
Representative of Hadi’s Mall Inc. Percy Hedwig applauded the GCA which is under the stewardship of former Guyana and West Indies all-rounder Roger Harper, saying that it’s a well-organised Association, since Harper is known in the cricket fraternity as a strong disciplinarian, adding that his manager had no hesitation in partnering with the GCA and will continue to do so.
In his brief remarks, Harper thanked Hadi’s Mall Inc. for joining forces and supporting the GCA with the tournament, while he took the opportunity to congratulate DCC for winning the tournament and urged GCC and the other teams to work harder to achieve more success next year.
DCC collected $120,000, trophy and medallions, GCC $80,000, trophy and medallions and GNIC $40,000 and a trophy.
Rajendra Chandrika received trophies for batsman with the highest score (222 which was scored for Everest against TSC) and batsman with the Most Runs (449) and Shaheed Mohammed got a trophy for Best Bowling performance (7 for 47 taken against GCC).
Johnson won the award for Most Wickets (22), Best All-rounder (291 runs and 22 wickets) and Most Valuable Player, respectively, while his GCC teammate Gavon Charles was rewarded for the Fielder with the Most Dismissals.
In giving an outline of the 2013-2014 tournament which was also launched last Friday night, Massiah said the same nine first division teams will do battle for supremacy and while points will be rewarded for first innings and outright wins, additional points will be awarded for bowling (5 for 10 wickets) and team’s batting score which surpasses 350.
In addition to the above, teams were reminded that a fast bowler must bowl 25% of the overs in a completed innings, as long as the total number of overs surpasses 20, as the GCA continues in their bid to build and mould fast bowlers for Guyana and West Indies cricket.
