RECENTLY crowned Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)-organised, Hadi’s City Mall-sponsored first division two-day competition winners, Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), will tonight receive their spoils, while the GCA will launch the 2013-2014 tournament at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) pavilion
The Christopher Barnwell-led DCC edged GCC by four points to take the top prize, after they defeated Transport Sports Club (TSC) in their final round encounter to gain a whopping 27 points at home, even as GCC were being held to a draw by their hosts Guyana Defence Force (GDF) at the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) ground, for which they got 15 points.
At DCC, TSC batted first and were dismissed for 117 runs, with only Stephen Alves (40) and Ewart Samuels (28) offering resistance to the bowling of Totaram Bishun who took 4 for 64 and Paul Wintz 3 for 20.
Thanks to Cohen Ismond, 80, Brian Sattaur 70, 67 from Wintz and 43 from Andrew Lyght Jr, DCC scored 351 for 8 declared, then watched as Bishun, who has been tearing apart local batting lineups at this level, took 6 for 39 (match figures 10 for 103) as TSC were bowled out for 93, handing DCC victory by an innings and 141 runs.
At the Thomas Lands-based MSC ground, GCC asked GDF to take first strike and bowled them out for 240, with Marcus Watkins scoring 53, as Kevin Plants took 3 for 24.
However, GCC, who before the start of the round were told they are leading DCC by two points, declared their first innings closed at 200 for 2, with Jeetendra Sookdeo hitting an unbeaten 111 and Vishal Singh contributing 53.
In their second innings, GDF made 219 runs and set GCC a target of 260 to record a come-from-behind win, to which they reached 113 for 5 when time ran out on them.
The final points standing reads: DCC 136, GCC 132, Guyana National Industrial Corporation 122, Police Sports Club 116, Gandhi Youth Organisation 89, Everest Cricket Club 88, MSC who were the defending champions 87, TSC 77 and GDF 72.
