Garbage disposal major bugbear for Bartica authorities

THE community of Bartica in Region 7 is awaiting the approval from the Environmental Protection Agency to commence disposing the region’s waste at a new landfill site. This is according to Vice Chairman Bell who spoke with the Guyana Chronicle on Saturday in the region.

According to Bell the local administration has been waiting for more than three months for the approval while they continue to dump garbage at a site that should have been closed a long time ago.

This newspaper was informed that garbage disposal at the old site should have been closed as it has become a health hazard for the residents of the community who live in close proximity.
They are affected by flies, stench and other unhealthy features of the dumpsite.

At the moment the old facility has become so crammed with waste that the region has to be shifting garbage from location to another on the very site to accommodate the garbage picked up from residents on a daily and weekly basis.

Meanwhile, the new site is ready and the regional administration has written to the Environmental Protection Agency to have the facility certified as soon as possible.
