Former Region 3 Chairman dies of a heart attack

MR Pariag Sukhai, former Regional Chairman of Region Three (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands) on the Peoples Progressive Party’s Civic (PPP/C) slate, and Former General Secretary of the Rice Producers Association, has died.

The party stalwart reportedly died at the Leonora ‘Cottage’ Hospital at 03:15hrs yesterday after   complaining of feeling unwell.

According to his sister, Pearly, who was taking care of the 87-year-old politician, his death came as a surprise to everyone.

She said her brother, who was suffering from diabetes, woke up sometime after 02:00hrs yesterday  and complained that he was not feeling well.

She told the Guyana Chronicle that he was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that his condition was critical.

They later told her that he’d subsequently died of a heart attack.

The following is the full text of a statement issued by the PPP:

“The People’s Progressive Party has lost another stalwart in the month of March. The Party mourns the passing of Comrade Pariag Sukhai, CCH, who fought with others in the early days of the Guyana Independence Movement, and later on against dictatorship and the suppression of people’s rights.
“He will be remembered as being one of the faces of the team assembled by Dr. Cheddi Jagan to contest the historic 1992 elections, which marked the return of free and fair elections.
“In the early days of the reconstruction of Guyana’s economy and infrastructure, he served selflessly as Regional Chairman of Region 3 (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara). His compassion and humility no doubt touched many lives, and he will remain embedded in our memories.
“He never minced words in getting over his opinion, as he was passionate about empowering his people and banishing to the dustbins of history the dark future that had awaited our children pre 1992.

“In his later years, up until his passing, his passion for progression never waned. He served as a Member of Parliament when the PPP was in the opposition. He was also a President of the Guyana Agricultural Producers Association (GAPA), and General Secretary of the Guyana Rice Producers Association (GRPA) and a Commissioner of Oaths to Affidavits and Justice of the Peace until his death earlier today.

“The PPP extends condolences to his bereaved relatives and comrades.”
