Conducted from 09:00hrs to 15:00hrs, the health fair was organised by First Assembly’s Marriage Department, with technical personnel provided by the Ministry of Health on a complimentary basis. Services provided included random blood-sugar (diabetes) testing; counselling in diabetic foot care; blood pressure testing and counselling; eye examinations, including screening for glaucoma and cataract; as well as nutritional counselling, including tips on combating anaemia.

Persons needing follow-up attention were referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). A blood donation drive and voluntary counselling and testing for HIV were also features of the health fair.

Elder Amardat Bhoejdat, a senior member of the church, was very elated about the outcome of the drive, and commented: “I think it’s a good initiative; and for the time I’ve been here, things have been going smoothly, and everybody’s doing their job professionally.

“I just wish that more people would have been here, especially to donate blood, which, as you know, helps to save lives.

“Overall, I am pleased with the way things are going, and I would be happy if this exercise could be conducted as often as possible, so that more Guyanese would wake up to the challenge and know that giving blood could save the life of someone.”
