Final Farfan and Mendes league match rescheduled for tomorrow … National Under-21s to face GCC

THE final match of the Guyana Hockey Board’s (GHB) 2014 Farfan and Mendes Hockey League will take place tomorrow at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground with the national men’s Under-21 team taking on hosts GCC. Starting time is 16:00hrs.This match was initially scheduled for last Friday at the same venue, but due to the heavy rainfall on Thursday night and Friday, it had to be rescheduled for tomorrow.

The end result of the match is not important as GCC have already won the first division league, having played unbeaten so far in the tournament.
However, the national men’s Under-21s along with three other teams, are the only ones to have held the powerful GCC team to a draw during the tournament, and this was in a first-round fixture when they played to a 2-2 draw.
According to GHB president Philip Fernandes, the Board was forced to culminate the 2014 season this year because it was severely affected by rain last year, hence the conclusion in 2015.
The former national player said the GHB will start the annual John Fernandes Insurance Service Limited’s Second Division tournament as well as a new Woodpecker Products’ Women’s League, beginning this weekend.
These two tournaments will be contested mainly at the St Stanislaus College ground, Carifesta Avenue, while some matches might be played at other venues, Fernandes stated.
