THERE were several administrative blunders that caused the organisers of the Bris `O’ boxing card to change the 15-bout card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday night to an all- exhibition card. The card was expected to see on show some of Guyana’s promising cadet fighters vying for supremacy as the country celebrates 50 years of independence, but because of several hiccups the organisers decided to make it an all -exhibition affair and no winners were declared.
However, the bouts that were staged were very entertaining and even though they were exhibition bouts, the referee on several occasions had to intervene to halt some of the bouts.
On hand to witness Guyana’s future world prospects were former Commonwealth champions Lennox Blackmoore and Kenny Bristol, (Amateur) Commonwealth champion, Winfield Braithwaite and 1980 Moscow Olympics bronze medalist, Michael Parris, and they were singled out for special commendation as the Guyana Boxing Association aspires to acknowledge the inputs of Guyana’s past heroes.
During the night, there were five bouts for schoolboys and Seon Graham (Forgotten Youth Foundation) sparred with his gym mate, Dwayne Kellman. Jakeel Codogan (Harpy Eagles ) traded punches with Travis Invervary (FYF) while Deron Williams (EBG) matched gloves with his gym mate, Malrick Walcott. Tyresse Persaud (HE) and Kevin Mullings (HE) turned in a crowd pleasing performance.
In the juniors category, Joshua Ross (CBG) sparred with Omar Pollard (PRBG) just before Shaquille Wright (EBG) entertained the gathering against Keevin Allicock (HEBG). Herman Wright and Isaiah Moore were also in action with three entertaining rounds.
There was just one female bout as Rondessa Bagot (PRBG) squared off with her gym mate, Akea Lamizone.
In the youth category, Quincy Boyce (GDF) opposed Joshua Corbin (Carryl), Kellon Isaacs (PRBG) squared off with Michael Edwards (FYF), Donovan Richardson (HEBG) faced off with Duel Augustine (PRBG), Mohammad Bacchus (PRBG) sparred with Ajay Gagashar (YA) while the elite boxers consisted of Nankumar Singh (REP) against Joel Williamson (RHJ) and Diwani Lampkin (GPF) against Clifton Graham (REP).
