…Captains promise tense Digicel final

WITH the finalists for this year’s Digicel National Schools Football Tournament decided and the fact that it will be a repeat of the 2015 edition, Christianburg/Wismar Secondary and their opponents Chase Academic Foundation, both captains have promised a tense affair.Chase was defeated in their last final encounter but their captain Jeremy Garrett is wary of the threat that the defending champions bring to the table.
“I know the game would not be an easy game since the team Christianburg/Wismar, have been playing well over the last few years. We do not expect any slow match or mis-plays on the field and we expect a challenging and difficult match, come Sunday,” he said.
Meanwhile, at the opposing end, Kishan Dey had less words for yesterday morning’s press briefing, saying, “I hope both teams come out and play strong and may the best team win.”
With one million reasons to win and a beautiful wooden trophy at stake, Christianburg will set their sights on their fifth title and Chase, their first, though there is still $750 000 for the second-place finishers.
Third- and fourth-place playoffs will also be contested on the night for $450 000 and $300 000 respectively when Bush Lot play Sir Leon’s.
Head of Customer Care attached to Digicel, Sherwin Osbourne, says, “Last year we know that Christianburg wanted to do something, which was to repeat four times and I know this year they want to repeat five times.
“But Chase this year said that they were nervous on the big stage and they now have the formula to win.
We were in all 10 Regions of Guyana as was promised and we had exiting games all around the country. We went into the remote locations, Lethem, Mabaruma, Mahdia, Orealla Bartica and every possible place in this country to play football and it was always exciting. We can’t expect anything better,” he contended.
The tournament which started on June 10 will see its final playing day of 2016 on Sunday from 16:00hrs with the third-place playoff while the final is billed for 18:00hrs.
