Dharmic Sabha appeals for maturity, respect during election season

RECENT political goings on have not gone unnoticed by civil society and the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, a civil society voice, has appealed for maturity and respect over the next few weeks.President of the Sabha, Dr Vindhya Persaud, in a statement yesterday said, “In the current politically charged atmosphere which exists in our country, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha is calling on all political parties to exercise maturity and respect during the campaign season and as the country moves towards elections.”

She pointed to Sunday’s attack where several persons were injured by missiles thrown by unknown assailants at two vehicles transporting supporters returning from a PPP/C Rally that was held at Albion on Sunday night. The scurrilous attack occurred between Numbers 50 and 51 villages on the Corentyne Coast in Berbice, and information received indicates that the vehicles came under bombardment with bottles that contained sand, rocks and a corrosive substance.
Persaud said, “The Sabha has noted with dismay and concern a number of despicable acts which have been recently reported; notably the throwing of missiles and harmful substances on women and children on their way home from a rally causing injury, the erection of effigies representing political leaders and the abusive and disrespectful language being used on political platforms. We would like to condemn those acts.”
She added, “We call on leaders of all political parties to insist that their members and supporters refrain from any act which can intentionally or unintentionally cause hurt, harm or injury to anyone, refrain from using language that can be construed as offensive, disrespectful or inflammatory, refrain from unseemly and disruptive behavior at political meetings and from removing or destroying political paraphernalia.”
