Cyclists to converge on West Demerara Sunday for R&R 40-miler

THE cream of Guyana’s cyclists will converge on the West Demerara area on Sunday to do battle in the 25th Annual R&R International Limited-sponsored 40-mile cycle road race which begins at 08:00hrs from the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.The event, which has been organised by national cycle coach Hassan Mohamed over the past 24 years, will see senior, junior, veterans and female cyclists battle for honours. The first six overall finishers as well as the top three, juniors, top three veterans and the top three females will receive trophies and cash prizes for their efforts.
During the course of the event, eight sprint prizes will be on offer.
After wheeling off from the Demerara Harbour Bridge area, the cyclists will proceed to Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo, before returning to the place of origin.
The defending open champion is Team Gillette Evolution’s Marlon `Fishy’ Williams who won last year’s event in one hour 38 minutes 59 seconds.
Jamal John will be out to defend the junior title, while Junior Niles, Keon Thomas and Markia Dick are the defending champions of the veterans Under-50 years of age, Mountain Bike and Ladies categories respectively.
Event organiser Mohamed said Managing Director of R&R International Limited, Jacob Rambarran, is a former racing cyclist who has always been very enthusiastic about the uplift of Guyana’s cyclists and the country’s sportsmen and women.
Jacob Rambarran’s son, Jacob Jr, is expected to be present to assist with the presentation of prizes to the respective winners.
