Craig man fatally beaten after committing robbery

ELDON Sampson, 25, of Craig East Bank Demerara yesterday morning met his demise after vigilantes from Samatta Point apprehended him when he rode up his bicycle to a teacher and snatched her bag containing $50,000, a cell phone, and laptop computer.

The woman raised an alarm and persons in the area responded and chased after the man.
The bandit, who was obviously unfamiliar with the area, in which he chose to commit his crime, attempted to flee from the persons pursuing him and ended up through a street which leads to nowhere.
The man, before he was caught by the more than two dozen residents who responded, fell off his bicycle and got up as he attempted to flee from the persons until he was cornered deep inside the street with nowhere to run.
It was there that residents inflicted several blows on the man before he was rescued by a taxi driver who took him to the Diamond Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Speaking with persons in the area, they all claimed to have been inside their homes but were alerted to the tramping through the street by persons, something that is not a normal occurrence. They also reported seeing a man ahead of the crowd and persons racing towards him.
Asked what the persons had in their hands, no one seemed to clearly remember and could not say what was used to inflict the blows on the man.
A visit to the man’s Lot 3 Craig Old Road residence found his father doing some construction work with the assistance of a friend. The man, Elvis Sampson, said that he did receive a call that his son was beaten and possibly chopped about the body by persons.
Up to the time of the visit of this newspaper the man was not aware that his son had died. It was after the police visited his home that he was informed by the ranks that the 25-year old was dead and that he needed to accompany them to the hospital to identify the body.
The senior Sampson said that his son who recently served jail time for a larceny conviction was only out about a month and a half ago and was trying to put things together. He said that he would usually speak to his son about leaving the yard, and whenever his son shows up with money his mother would question him of how he acquired it to which he would reply, that he worked for it.
Sampson said that on Thursday his son was fitting up a bicycle and informed him that he was going to look for employment on Friday. The man’s mother was not immediately informed of the development since according to Sampson she has a long standing policy that she should not be called at work to discuss home issues since it puts stress on her.
Persons in the area like the dead man’s father said that he is known to be involved in robberies in and around the communities along the East Bank Demerara.
