KULIP Latchminine, called Punwessie, and Maheshree Samaroo, known as Boujie, have appeared before Whim Magistrate Charlyn Artiga, charged with rape of a one-year-old child.Represented by former magistrate Kumar Dorisami, the defendants were not required to plead to the joint charge which was read them in camera. Particulars of the charge are that on January 24, 2016, at Portuguese Quarters, Port Mourant, the defendants allegedly engaged in sexual penetration of a one-year-old child.

They were each placed on $100,000 bail, and were ordered to lodge their respective passports with the police. Additionally, the defendants have been ordered not to communicate with the victim or her relatives.

The alleged assault on the infant was reported to the police by the child’s mother after her efforts had failed to console her weeping daughter. The constant sobbing resulted in the mother examining the baby’s private parts, thereby discovering that the child had been violated.

The defendants are expected to return to court on February 29.
