POLICEMAN David Lall of ‘A’ Division sustained minor injuries about his body when his motorcycle and a minibus collided at the accident-prone junction of D’urban and Smyth streets yesterday morning. According to Lall’s relative, who was waiting outside the operating room at the Georgetown Public Hospital, the officer left home early yesterday morning riding his motorbike to work. The relative related that around 08:00hrs he received a phone call telling him that Lall was involved in a collision with a minibus.
According to several persons who converged on the scene, the injured man was travelling on his motorcycle along D’urban Street when he collided with the minibus that was travelling on Smyth Street. The collision threw the biker face down onto the roadway.
Eyewitnesses rendered immediate assistance to the injured police officer as he lay writhing in pain. They lifted him into a vehicle and transported him to the hospital. Lall sustained injuries to his head and arms.
According to some onlookers, the policeman appeared to be in the wrong since the minibus was already crossing the junction when the motorbike approached. However, others argued that the officer had the right of way along D’urban Street and therefore the bus driver should have slowed down and allowed him to pass.
