POLICE Constable 22380 Ray Simon of Helena Village, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara jumped off a moving truck at Whim, Corentyne Berbice at about 19:00 hours on Wednesday, and was run over by one of its wheels.The 27-year-old police rank who had been attached to the Whim Police Station was reportedly
“hitching a ride” on his way to the Whim Station when tragedy struck. The vehicle did not stop at Whim, and Simon, in attempting to jump off the vehicle, lost his balance and fell on the roadway, where he was run over by the rear wheel of the motor vehicle. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Mourant Hospital.

Information reaching this newspaper state that it was raining heavily while Simon was on the Liverpool Public Road awaiting transportation. After none was going in his direction, he joined a truck whose driver, Nizam Khan, transports GuySuCo workers. Khan was alerted to Simon’s tragedy by workers attached to Albion Estate.

“I stopped at the spot at Liverpool for the Albion workers when the guy joined. When we reach Whim, the lorry was still moving, then them workers holler ‘Hold! Hold! Somebody fall out’,” Khan explained.

He related that the policeman thought he was going to stop at Whim, that’s why he jumped. Khan added that after he had been alerted, he came out and saw the unconscious body of Simon. “I pick he up quick and rush with he to the hospital, and there they say he died,” Khan said.
Reports indicate that Simon had tried to exit the vehicle from the front steps of the lorry, and was allegedly run over by the rear wheels of the truck. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Mourant Hospital.

The lorry driver has been taken into police custody for questioning, but is expected to be released shortly.

Simon enlisted in the GPF in May 2014, and had been stationed in ‘B’ Division since November 2014. One of his close friends described him as a jovial individual who was full of enthusiasm for life. He said Simon loved his job and would often talk about how he wanted to further his studies to move up the ranks in the Force.
