Guyana Chronicle Senior Reporter Alva Solomon has been awarded a prize in this year’s edition of the Godfrey Chin Prize for Heritage Journalism.Solomon is one of several awardees recognised by the judges of the Godfrey Chin Award (GCA) which is administered by the Guyana Cultural Association of New York, Inc.
He was awarded for his submissions which included the article titled “A trip to Ariwa Beach”, which was featured in the Guyana Chronicle in February this year.
The article highlighted the lighter, social side of the El Nino dry weather conditions which were ongoing in the Rupununi at the time.
The awards will be presented to the winners late in August during the Guyana Folk Festival celebrations in Brooklyn, New York.
The Godfrey Chin Prize for Heritage Journalism was established in 2011.
It is inspired by Godfrey Chin’s indefatigable efforts to study and to celebrate Guyana’s rich cultural heritage and creativity.
The prize has been established to encourage and reward writers whose published works promote understanding and appreciation of the diverse strands of Guyanese heritage and contribute to celebrating the commonalities that connect the people of Guyana.
Chin, who has been described as a master raconteur, social history icon and culture enthusiast, passed away in 2012 at age 74.
He was the author of the very popular Nostalgia series in various media, as well as a book– Godfrey’s Nostalgias Golden Memories of Guyana 1940-1980. He was also a pictorial enthusiast.
Chin had hosted pictorial exhibitions here and at various venues across North America, including Vancouver, Canada and in the US, namely Washington DC, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Orlando.
