THE unidentified charred remains of a person discovered in the aftermath of a fire that destroyed a Lot 1, area “A” Goedverwagting, Wales, West Bank Demerara home in the wee hours of Thursday morning has been removed by police.Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle said the body was burnt beyond recognition and based on investigation the fire appeared to be an act of arson.

According to police, the fire occurred at 01:30hrs and the body of the unidentified person was subsequently discovered among the rubble.

Investigations revealed that the home, which is usually unoccupied, is owned by Elizabeth Sattaur, who resides at Timehri East Bank Demerara (EBD).

The owner of the house, who is also a businesswoman, said she learnt of the fire from a friend, who called her around 02:00 hrs, informing her of what occurred.

She said on arrival at the scene, the fire was almost extinguished. Approximately 04:30 hrs, firefighters discovered the charred body inside the building.

Sattaur said no one was supposed to be occupying the house. She disclosed that the body was found in a stooping position in the bathroom area of the self-contained room in the lower flat of the building.

Meanwhile, according to Shameer Mohammed, a resident in the area, many persons only realised that there was a fire when the Wales Sugar Estate fire engine visited the scene during the blaze.

He said people from the nearby station visited the scene and broke the locks on the gate to enter the compound.

“The police assisted the firemen in putting out the fire; we later hear they find a body in the building. Normally no one lives there, but I hear is the bathroom the body was found, the hearse come and take the body away,” he explained.
