CCWU wins right to represent Regency Suites supervisors, chefs

THE Clerical and Commercial Workers’ Union (CCWU) which traditionally represents private sector workers won the right to represent supervisors and chefs employed at the Regency Suites/Hotel, according to a press release yesterday from President of the Union, Mr Sherwood Clarke.

On January 17, the CCWU had applied to the Trade Union Recognition and Certification Board (TUR&CB) which falls under the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security for recognition of not just supervisors and chefs but also for the rank and file workers.
Subsequently on February 17, the TUR&CB approved the CCWU as the sole bargaining agent for the ‘Supervisory Staff’ of Regency Suites/Hotel. The polls and surveys conducted by the TUR&CB, however, did not support recognition for the “rank and file” employees at the hotel.
Clarke noted that the agreement was significant for the supervisors and chefs as typically within the hospitality sector, many longstanding employees do not get their deserved benefits.
Meanwhile, the union and management representatives on July 23 achieved the Avoidance and Settlement of Disputes for the Supervisors and Chefs Bargaining Unit which was countersigned by Chief Labour Officer Charles Ogle at the Ministry of Labour, Brickdam, Georgetown.
Mr Basdeo, Manager of Regency Suites/Hotel, said that the hotel has been complying with the labour laws as well as the agreements and objectives of the CCWU with regard to the employees.
