Businessman jailed for 2 years ….on illegal gun, ammo charges

A 34-YEAR-OLD businessman was sentenced to two years imprisonment on Wednesday by City Magistrate, Fabayo Azore after he was found guilty of being in possession of an illegal firearm, along with matching ammunition.The court heard that on October 23, 2015 Orandi McCoy of Lot 16, William Street, Campbellville had in his possession a 9mm pistol and 15 live rounds of ammunition, when he is not the holder of a firearm licence.

The Magistrate sentenced McCoy to two years jail along with $50,000 fine on each charge. The sentences will run concurrently.

Meanwhile, the defence lawyer, Peter Hugh requested that bail be granted to his client pending an appeal at the High Court; however this was denied by the Magistrate.

McCoy owns and operates two businesses at his residence and at Orange Walk, Bourda, Georgetown, respectively. The Prosecution contended that police attached to the narcotics unit went to the home of the accused to conduct a search. Before commencing the search, McCoy told the ranks that he was the only person present in the building, and the only one who has access. As such, the search was conducted in his presence and the firearm and ammunition were found concealed in a cupboard in the shop.
