Building being sourced for Local Gov’t Commission

By Svetlana Marshall

THE Ministry of Communities is in the process of sourcing a building to house the Local Government Commission. The move comes amid calls by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) for President David Granger and Minister of Communities to submit their nominations to form the commission of eight.
Carol Sooba, a former controversial Town Clerk at City Hall, former Local Government Ministers Norman Whittaker and Clinton Collymore are the nominees put forward by the PPP to sit on the Commission.
During a recent press conference, PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee criticised the Government over its failure to establish the Local Government Commission (LGC) approximately five months after the holding of the historic Local Government Elections in March.
Rohee said having aggressively pursued the Local Government Elections upon entering Office, the Government should have subsequently moved to establish the commission once the elections were held.
“Mr Granger is on record stating that he wants everybody to know that Guyana is a country that is committed to the Rule of Law, that Guyana is committed to due process and holds the Constitution, but the Constitution, the Laws of Guyana and due process calls for the establishment of a Local Government Commission,” Rohee told reporters at Freedom House.
According to him, instead of appointing a tribunal to inquire, investigate and recommend whether Carvil Duncan, Chairman and appointed member of the Public Service Commission should be removed from office for misconduct, the Government should have moved to establish the Local Government Commission.
“It seems to me that the Local Government Commission is much more important than a tribunal to get rid of the chairman of the Public Service Commission, and a member of the Judicial Service Commission,” Rohee opined.
He is of the opinion that the Administration’s push for the removal of Duncan is an attempt to have control over the Public and Judicial Service Commissions.
“It is clear to us that the Government wants to control the Public Service Commission and the Judicial Service Commission. Mr Duncan sits on both Commissions. They want to be in a position to hire and fire in the public service and in the judicial service,” Rohee further contended.
