Junior Minister of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes has vowed that the APNU+AFC government will continue to fight against corrupt practices in the mining sector, which falls under the Ministry of Natural Resources.

In adding to the Budget 2016 debate in the National Assembly today, Minister Broomes pointed out that the gold mining sector is one of the areas that is challenging to the government.

She pointed out that the falling price in gold has been an issue that the Guyanese people have to live with.

“These are things that we can and must change,” Broomes told the House but according to the Minister, local miners made their contribution to the production increase by accounting for over 905 of declaration in gold.

She further noted, “We have to ensure that the men and women who are employed in the Natural Resources sector…are rewarded with better treatment.”

According to Minister Broomes, the real challenges lie in changing “old habits,” as she made reference to corruption within the sector.

“Even now the pockets of poor administration, lack of attention to safety and health, corrupt practices continue to unfold… bringing a sense of order to the Natural Resources Sector is one of the challenges of this APNU + AFC government…we need to turn around, rolling back the tides of gold smuggling is a priority,” Minister Broomes said.

She also noted that Guyana appears unable to benefit directly from half of the gold produce.

“This administration must set its face against corruption and corrupt practices.” The Minister noted that the government intends to ensure that all players in the sector are treated fairly, pointing out that the task is to create a vibrant natural resources sector.
