….Pattadin and Griffith misses out

THERE is a saying, “When you need something done well, do it yourself.”Such could be applied to the batting of Barnwell’s XI skipper Christopher Barnwell yesterday, after he struck a belligerent unbeaten 105 to pilot his team to 358 for 9 from 70 overs at the end of the first day of their three day trial match against Johnson’s XI at the Everest Cricket Club ground.
After seeing both Trevon Griffith (53; 3×4, 2×6) and Christopher Pattadin 93( 145balls, 13×4, 2×6) miss out on getting a big total following a positive start, Barnwell showed them how to get the job done, taking 76 deliveries to reach triple figures while batting at number 7.
He struck seven sixes and five fours in his ton, while during the process, added 98 for the fifth wicket with discarded national wicketkeeper/batsman Derwin Christian 37 (49balls, 4×4, 2×6) top push his side to 252 for 5 at tea, after they were 97 for 2 at lunch, having lost Griffith and Rajendra Chandrika (27; 3×4).
After his side slipped to 268 for 7, following the loss of Christian and Yatesh Dhanpaul (00), Barnwell joined forces with Kemol Savory (11) to add an additional 74 for the eighth wicket, before Savory went for a slog sweep against Zaheer Mohammed (1 for 29) and was bowled.
Amir Khan looked positive, especially after playing a sweetly timed drive through extra cover off Randolph Knights, but the bowler had the final say, when he knocked back his stumps, to add his wicket to that of Griffith’s that was taken earlier, as he (Knights) ended the day with 2 for 38.
Even though he came in for some rough treatment by a game Barnwell, Totaram Bishun led all wicket takers for the day with his 3 for 94, while there was a wicket each for Paul Wintz, Shaquille Mohammed and Antonell Atwell, who along with Andre Stoll, was given a rude awakening by the 26 year old Barnwell.
The action is set to continue today from 0900hrs.
