Balram Persaud remains hospitalised – Showing signs of improvement

By Leroy Smith

FIFTY-FOUR year old Assistant Commissioner of Police (Administration), Balram Persaud remains hospitalised, but is showing signs of improvement. Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle Newspaper on Monday on the corridors of the Public Buildings, Georgetown, Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan indicated that he visited Persaud in the company of Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud Sunday afternoon.
“Thank God he is reacting; he recognized me,” Ramjattan stated, noting that this was an improvement of Persaud’s condition, since he was admitted to hospital in an unconscious state Friday. According to the minister, he has been briefed by doctors on Persaud’s condition.
He said that the Assistant Commissioner is being constantly monitored.
Reports are that on Friday last Persaud lost control of the vehicle he was driving and slammed into a utility post on the West Bank Demerara, close to the approach of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
There has been no official word from the Police Force on the accident; Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaker on Monday told the Guyana Chronicle that the Force will not be issuing a statement since the details of the crash was already made public.
The Police Traffic Department has commenced their investigation into the crash and based on information reaching this publication no breathalyzer tests was conducted on the senior officer to see if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
It was not possible to carry out such a test since Persaud was admitted to hospital in a critical condition and doctors would not have allowed anyone to get close to the Assistant Commissioner.
Persaud is soon to proceed on his pre-retirement leave and was at the time of the accident on annual leave.
