Initial investigations revealed that the driver of a motor lorry was proceeding along an access road at Belmont when it is alleged that a nine-year-old sibling who was pushing the toddler in a stroller attempted to cross the road and the vehicle collided with the stroller.

Residents identified the driver of the truck, GJJ 4896, as Sherlan Wills of Helena Number 1 Mahaica, ECD. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations.

In an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, the toddler’s grandfather said he was working in the city when he received a call from his son stating that the toddler had died.

“My son said, daddy baby dead, meh say how he dead because before I left he was good. He said his little nephew went around the corner with the baby to deliver something and a truck man turning onto the market dam kill he in the stroller,” the grandfather said.

This newspaper understands that the driver mis-averaged the length of the truck while turning and did not realize he would have collided with the children.

“He come out and stand up on the bridge and ask if is he do that, and he was told yes, and he was asked if he was blinded if he couldn’t see. He left and carry the truck by he boss man, and the boss man carry the truck to the station,” the grandfather explained.

“We are poor people and these type of things cause us misery.” The father of the toddler, Randy Williams is calling on the police to ensure that justice is served.

“The truck was too big to make a single turn on the corner, he was suppose to reverse and turn deeper. Imagine he swing the turn and didn’t look for the children on the corner.”
