… Cyril Hunte suffers from `mountain sickness’

GUYANA’S Aubrey Gordon was among the top performers at the United States Masters National Cycling Championships, held in Ogden, Utah two Saturdays ago, but his Guyanese counterpart Cyril Hunte caused harm to himself.According to reports coming out of the United States, the two former Guyana national champions participated in the road race (58 miles) as well as the criterium.
The road race was an 8 000 ft elevation and was not kind to both riders and Gordon smartly exited the race just after five miles into the event.
Hunte, however, continued for approximately 25 miles into the race, and this turned out to be an unwise decision, as he started to suffer from what is called `mountain sickness’ throughout the day and night and did not recover adequately to be effective in the criterium the next day.
Gordon however, rode a brilliant criterium the following day.
The course was just over a mile and 78 cyclists faced the starter.
Gordon, who won the 2012 version of the event, came up against the 2013 champion Mark Hoffenburg and Lawrence Nolan, a World Pursuit Champion among others.
These cyclists did not disappoint the crowd, the report stated. These guys were obviously marking each other during the race. There were about four different breakaways during the course of the event, but the peloton caught up with them every time.
Gordon, it is reported, placed himself strategically behind Hoffenburg who had a four-man team working for him throughout the race and about 400 metres from the finish line, Nolan jumped the bunch and opened a 10-metre lead from Hoffenburg and Gordon and went on to win. Gordon placed third.
