THE tragic end to Clive Atwell’s last fight against T&T-based Dexter Gonzales at the Giftland Mall last October is well known within the Guyanese Diaspora. The boxer, who has been raising funds for his second surgery in Trinidad and Tobago after having an emergency surgery the same night, is taking his fundraising to the United States over the 4th July weekend.
According to Atwell, it was Fly Jamaica Airways that donated the free tickets for him and some members of the fundraising committee to travel.
He is scheduled to be present at the Independence Cup Softball Championships at the New York and Canarsie Park in Brooklyn, where he will be collecting donations as well as selling DVDs of his fights.
To this date, Atwell and his 8-member committee have raised G$1.2M, but is still lacking in his G$5M target.
According to committee member Linden ‘Jumbie’ Jones, the journey to the $5M has been a hectic one.
“To this date it has been the general public and small man who have been contributing,” the local comedian stated. “Some members of Corporate Guyana have also made pledges we are waiting to receive.”
He added that the Government of Guyana had pledged $2M to Atwell but the boxer was still waiting to receive the donation.
Joseph Ramkumar of Payless Variety Store – also a member of the committee – stated that the entire donation process is one where accountability is present. He added that the donations will be verified by Chartered Accounts firm Parmasar & Company.
Atwell, who was given a medical timeline for the surgery, is now two months past the calendar date.
“I am past the date but I am still holding on and thanking the public for their contributions so far. With God’s help we will get there,” stated a hopeful Atwell.
Atwell, who currently holds the National Featherweight and Lightweight belts as well as the WBC CABOFE Featherweight and WBC CABOFE JR Welterwight titles is also a Minister for the Methodist Church of Guyana District. He stated it was the church who first started the donations.
Guyanese can still donate to the boxer’s cause by contacting him on 642-9961, 672-9215 while deposits can be made to Republic Bank Account #242-970-2.
U.S-based Guyanese are encouraged to lend their support and help in whatever way possible to aid his way back to boxing.
