A MOTHER of four was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment by Sparendaam Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul after she was found guilty of trafficking cocaine.Zainab Muhammed, 30, of 197 Pineapple Street, South Ruimveldt was sentenced in absentia after she failed to make an appearance in court, which caused the magistrate to issue a warrant for her arrest.
The woman was convicted for having 1.426 kg of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking at the then Ogle International Airport, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on May 21, 2015.
The trial commenced and ended on Monday after four witnesses were called by Police Prosecutor David Goodridge. Thereafter, the accused was found guilty and was immediately sentenced by the magistrate.
The defendant’s lawyer, Dexter Todd, was not present during the trial, but arrived after the sentencing and recused himself from the case.
The mother of four was reportedly arrested at the airport after she was discovered with 1.5 kilogrammes of cocaine strapped to her body. She was an outgoing passenger on a LIAT flight destined for Barbados.
