DISTRIBUTION giant Ansa McAl Trading has once again come on board with the now-popular annual fund-raiser of the Young Warriors Cricket Club (YWCC) of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice – Mash Cup 2016.At a simple presentation ceremony held recently, Imran Khan, Marketing Representative of the Berbice area, handed over the sponsorship cheque to Hubern Evans, senior coach of the club.
Khan said that his company is proud to be associated with the cricket club, which has over the years produced many outstanding cricketers, with the latest being current West Indies Under-19 captain Shimron Hetmyer, who is in Bangladesh for the Youth World Cup.
Hetmyer is also a senior national opener. Khan continued by commending the club for providing opportunities for the young people in the Canje area. He also praised the club for the level of accountability they have shown over the years.
Evans, in reply, thanked the company for coming on board once again after providing support for every tournament since its inception.
He said that despite the challenges faced, the club continues to march forward. Evans emphasised that Ansa McAl Trading has been one of the biggest sponsors of the annual fund-raiser over the years.
He called on other businesses and private individuals to follow suit. Evans warned that the pattern of crime these days involves many youths.
This event will form part of Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebration, with proceeds going towards further improvements to the club’s facilities and its day-to-day running. In addition, funds will be allocated to three schools in the Number 19 to Gangaram area.
The tournament will be played on February 23 – a national holiday – and will involve 10 second division teams from the area. It will be five overs-a-side with no first division cricketer allowed.
Top clubs such as Canje Pathfinders, Betsy Ground Triple Stars, Kendall’s Union A, Rose Hall Community Centre and the host club are expected to compete for top honours. Incentives, to the value of over $100 000, will be up for grabs with lots of gate prizes.
