American airport cocaine ‘mule’ jailed for three years

AN American citizen, who was recently caught with cocaine hidden in a photo album cover as he attempted to board a flight at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) destined for New York, was yesterday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.Antoine Brumfield, 20, who was born in the US but has been living in Guyana for the past 11 years appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded guilty to the charge.
Particulars of the charge stated that on April 24 at the CJIA, Brumfield had 2.568 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru explained that on the day in question ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) were monitoring outgoing passengers when they observed the defendant, who was a Caribbean Airlines passenger, acting in a suspicious manner.
The court heard that the illicit substance was found in his suitcase and a further search unearthed two photo album that also had cocaine.
Mangru noted that the defendant under caution admitted knowledge of the drug and explained to the rank that he would have been paid US$10,000 if the plan was executed.
Brumfield explained to the magistrate that his girlfriend is three months pregnant and he was forced to take the job due to financial constraints. The magistrate fined the man $30,000 in addition to his three-year sentence.
