Alder shines but Guyana blown away again by St Vincent : …ends tournament winless

Guyana’s Captain Natasha Alder turned in her best performance of the tournament, but it was still not enough as she watched her team crashed to a 29 points defeat (40 – 69) against St Vincent and the Grenadines as the curtains came down on the 2014 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Women’s Championship yesterday in Tortola.

The Guyanese went into the match still bruised from their embarrassing 113 – 27 trashing suffered at the hands of the Bahamas the previous day, but it seems as though only Alder showed up and her teammates were probably left at their hotel.

Alder finished with 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and was the only ray of sunlight peeping from behind the dark cloud that overshadowed the Guyanese.

St Vincent is the only team that the Guyanese could’ve actually matched with at the championship and statistics would prove this as well, but the outcome of the games still ends negatively for the local ladies.

Guyana only scored four first quarter points which came from Alder, while St Vincent had a complete team effort in their 15 points scored.

The second half is when Alder came alive and this time had a little help from Tamara Hunter (five points) and Shanna Chester (seven points and eight rebounds) as Guyana outscored St Vincent 19 – 13 to close the first half still trailing 21 – 27.

Behind Vasha Daniels who finished with a game high 25 points and 12 rebounds, St Vincent piled on the points while Guyana struggled to get to the basket.

Ginelle Ifill only scored three points, but the 19 year-old Centre had a good showing on the glass where she had ten rebounds and two block shots.

Yesterday’s game concludes a horrid showing for Guyana at the tournament as the ladies were certainly no match for their regional counterparts.

Coach Ann Gordon was optimistic of a successful tournament and had even pitted her ladies to win the event but it was the total opposite as Guyana.

A total of 437 points were scored against Guyana in their five games played and were only able to score 183 points of their own.

The Championship game was played between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic while the US Virgin islands and Trinidad and Tobago battled for third.

Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines, US Virgin Island, the Bahamas and Barbados were the eight teams who contested the 2014 CBC Championship.
