64-yr-old remanded on stealing cash, jewellery charge

SIXTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Oswald Norton (no address given), who yesterday pleaded guilty to stealing $10,000 in cash and $199,000 in gold jewellery from Patricia Bovell at Bourda Market on May 14, was remanded to prison until today, pending a probation report.

Norton told the court that he does some masonry and carpentry work, and has had no prior or pending matters. He apologised for committing the offence, and offered to make financial restitution.

The prosecution’s facts are that the virtual complainant went to the market on the day in question, and engaged the defendant to fetch her bag to the car. Norton told Bovell to go ahead to the car and he would follow with the bag.
The defendant placed the bag in the car trunk, but after the VC arrived at home, she discovered her purse with the cash and jewellery missing.

Bovell immediately reported the matter to the Kitty Police Station, and after he was confronted by the police, Norton admitted stealing the articles and selling them.
