As the title suggests, the book will feature the profiles and accomplishments of 50 Guyanese women in its attempt to prove that ‘Out of the ordinary, comes the extraordinary’, a main theme being promoted by the publication.
The book seeks to attract women of all backgrounds in an aim to highlight that despite one’s economic or educational position, success is still within their reach.
In an interview with Roianne, she said that compiling this book will bring out stories that need to be told about Guyanese women from all walks of life. “So many Guyanese women have so many inspirational stories, but don’t get to talk about these stories enough,” Roianne said.
“And if we want things to change for girls, we have to be role models; they are not just going to change,” she said.
Girls should be able to see that humble beginnings can make extraordinary outcomes, she said. “Women you might see who have achieved something may have come from a background similar to theirs. Moreover, we need to appreciate someone who brings up six wonderful children has contributed to society as much as someone who has done something else, so we wanted to get a cross section of Guyanese women from home and abroad,” Roianne said.
The selection process is one that allows women to voluntarily submit their stories Online via the Women of Kaieteur Website.
‘Women of Kaieteur’ is an organisation founded by Roianne and several other UK- based Guyanese, and aims to unite Guyanese women around the world so as to boost employment and enterprise.
When the book is published, Roianne said that she will then seek sponsorship so as to distribute at least one copy of it to every school in Guyana so that girls can have access to it.
So far, she said, the stories she has been receiving have been nothing short of inspiring. “There’s a woman of Guyanese parentage,” she said, “who became a teenage mom at 15 years old; now, she has a successful career in the UK government for the Probation Service. So, every day she helps people through rehabilitation. “Another interesting story we have received is from a woman who says her greatest achievement was being able to open her own farm; and she sent us a photo of her on the farm.”
Apart from in schools, the published book will also be available worldwide via Roianne’s Online bookstore.
