THE New Amsterdam municipality is leading the fight against the coronavirus in Region Six (East Berbice/ Corentyne). The agriculture-based region has three municipalities, the others being Rose Hall and Corriverton.

While Corriverton and Rose Hall have begun to implement measures, New Amsterdam has taken the “Bull by the horns” by hosting sensitisation sessions with vendors, in collaboration with regional health officials, and has shortened business hours within the market and the township.

On Wednesday, continuing its fight against the global pandemic, COVID -19, the New Amsterdam Market closed its gate to facilitate a complete fumigation process around the complex.

Fumigation is a method of pest control that completely fills an area with poisonous gas that kills pests.

The exercise was a joint effort between the Regional Environmental Health Department and the Municipality of New Amsterdam. The team was headed by Environmental Health Inspectors, Jaiissa Williams and Shevone Charles and included a supervisor and eight spray attendants.

During the fumigation exercise, the 600 odd stalls, along with the Fisheries Department, Meat Centres and Municipal offices were sprayed.

The New Amsterdam Municipality is geared to help its citizens live long healthy lives, free from the threat of the coronavirus.
