MINISTER of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, on Tuesday, commissioned a renewable energy project that supplies solar power to the primary school and teachers’ quarters at Parikwarinau in Region Nine.
The solar system was installed at the South Rupununi Village through a collaboration between the Ministry and the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF-REDD+) Project.
FCPF-REDD+ Project Coordinator, Clayton Hall, was also present at the commissioning.
The initiative resulted from a previous engagement with the community in November 2019 during which village leaders, teachers and residents lobbied the ministry and FCPF-REDD+ for support to rehabilitate the school’s defunct solar system.
At the commissioning ceremony, teachers, pupils and other villagers lauded the support and expressed gratitude to the ministry and FCPF. They outlined how the project will benefit them, especially the pupils.
During the past three years of implementation, the FCPF-REDD+ project has engaged and partnered with indigenous and forest-dependent communities, including those of the South Rupununi to build capacity and knowledge, and ensure REDD+ readiness.
