…court awaits probation report

ALMOST six years after the murder of fisherman Chetram Bharrat, who was killed during an invasion at his Haslington, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home, his killer was on Tuesday found guilty of the crime.

Errol Khan, called ‘Vinode Maraj’ and ‘Bruk-up,’ was found guilty of the charge by a 12-member jury. The charge read that on May 2, 2015 at Haslington, ECD, he murdered Bharrat, called ‘Toney.’

Khan was represented by attorney-at-law Ravindra Mohabir, while the state was represented by prosecutors Abigail Gibbs and Sarah Martin.

Attorney Mohabir requested that a probation report be prepared for his client before sentencing. The judge agreed and deferred sentencing until March 13, 2020.

DEAD: Chetram Bharrat

Khan is also before the court for a second indictment, which alleges that on May 2, 2015 at Haslington, ECD, he attempted to murder the deceased’s wife, Lomattie Ramdat. He is also charged with stealing $379,000.

According to reports, Chetram Bharrat, 40, was brutally chopped to death while his wife Lomattie Ramdat, 36, received several chops; she was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) in a critical condition.

Khan had admitted to the police that he shared a relationship with Ramdat, but the woman refused to leave her husband and he became jealous.

During the attack, Ramdat reportedly attempted to go to her husband’s aid but was also chopped several times by Khan.

After the incident, the woman who claimed that she and her husband suffered the fate as a result of a robbery, was forced to change her story after residents who are familiar with her relationship with the accused began speaking about it and expressing the view that it was her lover who had committed the act.

The police had issued a wanted bulletin for Khan and he was four months later arrested for the crime.
