MAHDIA Secondary School has become the latest beneficiary of steelpans provided by the Ministry of Education.

The presentation was made at the opening ceremony of the National Children’s Mashramani Competitions on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry, and Unit of Allied Arts Administrator, Lorraine Barker-King.

The aim is to foster the advancement of the artform in the school and, by extension, Region Eight as well as create more well-rounded students in schools.

This is another of several efforts by the Ministry of Education, to deliver on commitments to develop the allied arts in schools and achieve the ministry’s goal to provide equal opportunities for schools in the hinterland and coastal areas.

This follows several presentations in other schools across the country, including Port Mourant in Region Six, and Kwakwani Secondary and Mackenzie High Schools, in Region 10, among others.

The Ministry of Social Cohesion and Republic Bank also contributed to the artform in Guyana by sponsoring steel band workshops, and music literacy programmes, that have increased the number of bands in schools, and subsequently increased the number of entries in this year’s Mashramani Steelband competitions.
