Man accused of trafficking narcotics granted bail

A 20-year-old man was, on Thursday, February 13, 2020, released on $100,000 bail by Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for narcotics trafficking.
Michel Persaud of Logwood, Enmore, East Coast Demerara was charged for the offence which alleged that, on January 21, 2020, at Lethem Central Rupununi. He had 435 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Persaud made his first court appearance on January 22, but was remanded to prison.
However, when he appeared in court on Thursday, with legal representation, he was granted bail.

The man’s attorney,Bernard DaSilva, argued that the police file in the matter was still incomplete and there was no information as to when it would be available.

The Magistrate agreed and granted Persaud $100,000 bail. The case was adjourned until March 4, 2020, for report.

According to reports, on the day in question, police ranks were conducting a search on a motor bus on the Main Road in the vicinity of Manari, Lethem.

Persaud, who was a passenger of the said minibus was searched and the ranks found a black plastic bag containing a quantity of suspected cannabis weighing 435 grams.
