Police sergeant threatens to kill his Hope, ECD family members

A mother and her two children, at Hope Lowlands, East Coast Demerara, are living in fear after her ex-husband turned up at their home over the weekend and threatened to end their lives if he was not given access to their home.

According to Britney Downer, her father, who is a sergeant in the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and who is stationed at police headquarters, disregarded a restraining order which her mother secured on Christmas Eve, last year.

She said the man visited the home on two occasions since the order was issued and according to her, he informed ranks at the Cove & John Police Station that he “ain’t got time with no restraining order.”

The young woman told the Guyana Chronicle that her father moved out of the family’s home last June to live with another woman with whom he fathered a child who is almost in his teens.

The young woman noted that she also has a younger brother who is still in primary school.
She said that last December, her father returned to the house with some clothing, however, a heated exchange led to him leaving the home in a hasty manner sometime after.

She noted that on Saturday last, the man returned with a suitcase with clothing and after she told him he was not welcomed at the home, he informed her that “we will leave her in body bags. ”She said she became even more fearful after he pulled out a cutlass from under the seat of the minibus he was driving as he threatened her.

Downer said that in recent times, many women have been at the receiving end of brutal chopping incidents and she is fearful that the man may target her and her mother.
She said that on numerous occasions, the matter was reported to the Cove and John Police Station but the ranks there have been ignoring the family’s pleas.

She is calling on the Commissioner of Police to investigate the matter since, she noted, the family is afraid that her father may carry out his threats.
