Let us end violence in schools now!

Dear Editor,
IT is almost painful and heartbreaking to watch the video of two students of a secondary school in the mining town of Linden having to resort to violence to solve their problems.
This speaks to my mind of a wider problem that exists in our society today.
I do not profess to be a sociologist; in my humble opinion the problems faced by our young people today are more complex than they seem, and therefore this drop in the bucket so to speak, speaks to a wider problem in the fragmentation of our society.
As a society we must take a brother’s-keeper approach in dealing with the social ills that plague our society.

We must be able to guide our young people and point them in the direction that violence is not the way to solve our issues. A cultural shift is therefore critical, if we as a society will be an end to such moral decadence. The days when there is a callous approach or a mind-your-own business toward violence among our youths must cease now.

We as a society cannot stand idly by and see our young people engaging in brawls without calling on the members of our disciplined forces, particularly the Guyana Police Force, for their intervention. Let us fight to stamp out this social ill now.

Best Regards,
Dillon Goring
