GIVING a synopsis of the success of Guyana Restaurant Week (GRW), President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) Mitra Ramkumar said it was indeed a culinary adventure for both locals and those visiting from the Diaspora.

He related that GRW can be described as an activity where you can “explore, eat and repeat” at restaurants that participate to make fine dining pocket-friendly.

This year, the sixth annual GRW was launched in November, and 23 restaurants signed onto the agreement, offering standard prices for both lunches and dinners, providing a fine-dining experience for Guyanese and tourists.

Ramkumar said that standards have been placed on restaurants to encourage domestic tourism. This includes that lunch must be a two-course meal, while dinner must be a three-course one.

GRW is usually held twice per year, since its commencement in November 2014 when lunch at any of the restaurants that participated was a fixed price of $2,500 and dinner either $4,000 or $5,000.

Ramkumar, speaking to the Pepperpot Magazine said that this year’s GRW in November was dubbed the biggest so far, with the number of restaurants that participated and even some newcomers that got registered with THAG.

The THAG President added that some newcomers this season were Watooka House Restaurant, and Jaxx and the Colombian Restaurant on Waterloo Street, Georgetown.
“GRW is growing from strength to strength, and so all of these restaurants we have been promoting affordability as part of getting domestic tourism, and getting Guyanese and others to come out and participate in this one-week event,” Ramkumar said.
He stated that as GRW grows even bigger, he is encouraging more restaurants, be it big or small, to get registered with THAG, such as Watooka House Restaurant, where city folk can go enjoy dinner overlooking the Demerara River in Region 10.

Ramkumar pointed out too that other restaurants across Guyana can also get on board to promote inter-regional travel and dining, so people from the city can go to other outlying areas, as well those folk can come to Georgetown and vice-versa.

“We want to give people the option to go wherever they wish to experience fine dining at an affordable price,” he said.

Ramkumar added that this year, more people from all walks of life supported GRW, because they did their bit in advertising the one-week event, so people knew and went out to the various restaurants.
