Man sentenced to two years for trafficking drugs

MAGISTRATE Faith McGusty, on Thursday December 5, 2019, sentenced a man to two years in prison and fined him $292,800 for trafficking marijuana.

Abel Simon appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to the charge, when it was read to him.

Particulars of the charge stated that, on December 4, 2019, at 70km, Cuyuni River, Essequibo Magisterial District, he (Simon) had in his possession 488 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
“I get nuff children, I been selling it to get money fa them I sell it to mek a living” Simon said.

Police prosecutor Seon Blackman told the court that, on the day in question, police, acting on information, intercepted a car where Simon was the passenger. A search was conducted and a black plastic bag was found containing the suspected leaves, seeds, and stems.

Blackman added that Simon was told of the offence and he admitted ownership of the items. He was arrested and charged.
Magistrate McGusty, after listening to the prosecutor, sentenced Simon to two years in prison and fined him $292,800.
