PROFESSIONAL golfers from across the world and those locally will be gearing for the upcoming 2019 Guyana Open Golf Cup which was officially launched yesterday at the Marriott Hotel in Kingston.

Golf’s biggest event of the year tees off on October 26 and 27 but the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) executives, in partnership with the Marriott Hotel Guyana, who is a major sponsor of the sport, as well as tournament title-holder; Ganesh Parts, through their world-famous Bridgestone tyre brand, unveiled the Cup’s official plans for 2019.

During yesterday’s brief ceremony, LGC president Aleem Hussain noted that the Cup is expected to be bigger than usual with a number of golfers from Canada, Barbados, Trinidad, USA, French Guiana and others visiting the local soil in pursuit of the coveted Guyana Open Title; held by reigning nine-time champ Avinash Persaud.

Speaking on his defence this year, Persaud, who will be chasing his 10th Guyana Open title, highlighted that it would be a repeat of the previous years where he walks away with the title; seemingly on one leg given the dominant ways he snatched the title in the past.
Persaud also thanked Hussain for keeping golf alive and making the sport bigger than it’s ever been over the years, adding that the course was in outstanding shape and he expected high levels of competition in a few weeks.

Marriott Guyana Director of Sales, Sandra Bernal, said that the hotel sponsors golf internationally and was excited to have the partnership with LGC to sponsor golf in Guyana. She further pointed out that the hotel will be hosting its official Open on November 3 as a way to thank and give back to Guyana for their loyalty.

LGC treasurer Aasrodeen Shaw said that the recently acquired golf carts which were in partnership with Marriott came at a great as the Open will be the ideal place to make the visiting bevy of golfers feel like they’re in the international golfing atmosphere.
Hussain, meanwhile, revealed that Copa Airlines is now an official sponsor of the LGC for the upcoming year, while Friday, October 25 will be the official opening of the Guyana Open weekend with a Champion’s Dinner to be held at the LGC indoor clubhouse.
