THREE armed bandits, on Friday evening, terrorised a Port Mourant family while demanding cash and jewellery.

Drupattie Harpaul, 76, a watermelon vendor of Lot 34 Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant, recalled that at around 21:00 hrs, she was sitting in a hammock in the bottom-flat of her home when one of the three masked men approached and demanded she hand over “the cash”.

The men were armed with a gun, crowbar and cutlasses. The elderly woman said she begged them not to hurt her and told them she did not have any money, but the bandits proceeded to hit her across the forehead with the crowbar.

“The blood start pour out and me start holler. Meh ah beg then nah hurt me! Nah hurt me,” the tearful pensioner told this publication.

Drupattie related that she sold her produce at the market on Friday and was to return on Saturday morning but was unable to do since she was hospitalised until midday Saturday.

Meanwhile, after only grabbing a cellphone from the grandmother, the bandits then turned their attention to the woman’s 17-year-old granddaughter, Lena Harpaul, who was in the kitchen, and hit her in the head with a cutlass.

Lena told Guyana Chronicle that the incident left her terrified and in severe pain. Her parents, who were in the upper-flat of the house, were also attacked.

She related that her father was held at gunpoint while her mother hid in a bedroom.

The thieves had to cut short their heist and quickly escaped after neighbours began to converge at the Harpauls’ house. Lena’s grandmother had run towards the fence and screamed for help. The bandits carted off three cellphones. The police are investigating the incident.
