PERSONS unknown have allegedly been trying to hack into the email accounts of Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo.

Jagdeo noted in a statement on Thursday at his weekly press conference, that the attempts have been made over the past three days. Members of the public have suggested that the hackers may be tied to a US lobbying firm the party hired back in March for a brief period.
“There have been several attempts to hack my email over the past three days, several attempts and I have been notified several times by Google,” he said. He said too that persons have been trying to create fake accounts of Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) officials.

In March this year, the PPP hired a US-based lobbying firm to run its elections campaign. That company -– Mercury Public Affairs – was under federal probe as prosecutors interviewed several witnesses about the flow of foreign money to the firm and two others.
Mercury was one of the groups that were recruited by Paul Manafort seven years ago, to help improve the image of the Russia-aligned president of Ukraine, the New York Times reported recently. The PPP on March 5, 2019, signed a contract with Mercury Public Affairs. According to the contract, which was seen by this newspaper, the firm was expected to provide strategic consulting and management services specific to issues facing the party in areas of government relations and issues management.
