SOME 50 drivers are currently registered with the Essequibo Mini Bus and Hire Car Association as they welcome the new move by the Minister of Business, Haimraj Rajkumar, to introduce a new fare structure.

On Wednesday, the drivers flocked around the bus shed at the Anna Regina Car Park to get registered.

They paid a fee of $500 to become a member of the association and an additional $100 for a copy of the fare. Only fares issued by the association and bear a stamp along with the signature of the secretary and chairman will be valid, secretary of the association, Naith Ram said.

He said when members are registered, then an election will be held when new members will be elected. Asked what are some of the benefits of being registered with the association, Naith Ram said complaints by drivers are easily followed up.

He said only recently the association met with the new commander of ‘G’ Division, Cristal Robinson and several issues concerning traffic officers and drivers were raised. He said the commander assured him that whatever are the member’s concerns, they will be addressed.
Chairman of the association, Nazemul Mohammed, also called on drivers to get registered and to contact him if they are having issues on the roads. Drivers and commuters commended Minister Rajkumar for putting a fare structure in place for drivers to follow.
