Vendor remanded for alleged drug trafficking

CHIEF Magistrate Ann McLennan on Tuesday remanded to prison Shemroy Hackett, a 30-year-old vendor, on a drug-trafficking charge.

Hackett of East Coast Demerara appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and denied that on July 8, 2019 at the Bartica Police Station, he had 1,184 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail for Hackett. Mansfield told the court that on the day in question, Hackett was searched while at the Bartica Police Station and the narcotic was found in a black plastic bag which Hackett had in his possession.

Additionally, Mansfield told he court that Hackett acknowledged ownership of the drug and told the police that he was doing a “small hustle.”

After remanding Hackett the chief magistrate transferred the matter to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for August 2, 2019.
