TWO miners were, on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, remanded to prison for attempting to murder their drinking partner.

Shameer Mathias, 23, and Leonardo Bennett, 20, both of Henrietta Village, Essequibo, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate, Sherdel Issacs-Marcus and were not required to plead to the capital offences.

Particulars of the charge read that on June 4, 2019, at Arrangay Backdam, Cuyuni River, they wounded Vickey Williams with intent to commit murder.

According to the facts presented in court by Police Prosecutor, Shellon Daniels, the two defendants and the victim are known to each other.

On the day in question, the duo and Williams were consuming alcohol at Arrangay Backdam when a heated argument ensued among them.

Daniels told the court that one of the defendants armed himself with a broken beer bottle and stabbed Williams about his body; Williams fell to the ground. Both accused then armed themselves with pieces of wood and began beating the victim.

The victim was then rushed to the Suddie Hospital but was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he is still being treated.

The Acting Chief Magistrate remanded the duo to prison until June 26, 2019, and transferred the matter to the Bartica Magistrates Court.
