Wiltshire, Cadogan snag Woodpecker Juniors squash titles

JUNIOR Sportsman of the year Shomari Wiltshire and Abosaide Cadogan, took the male and female titles respectively of the Woodpecker Junior National Squash tournament.
Both were also awarded Most Outstanding Players, while Louis DaSilva took the special award of Most Improved Boy and Tiana Gomes Most Improved Girl.

The thriller for the evening was the fight for the Boys under 15 title between Michael Alphonso and Nicholas Verwey.

Both boys have had outstanding matches throughout the tournament, but it was Alphonso who slid into rhythm and showed early dominance.

The long rallies were filled with a variety of shots; tight lengths, drops that kissed the wall literally centimetres above the tin, and low, hard cross-courts that skimmed past their opponent.

Alphonso’s deception sent Verwey in the wrong direction and despite Verwey’s unbelievable retrieval skills, the extra energy spent cost him further into the game.

Alphonso powered through the first and second game with two 11/6 wins and finalised the match at 11/4. Spectators gave both boys their due with long applause and compliments.
