THE air was filled was love and delight as ‘Supa-Stylistics’ hosted their 28th production of the annual Mother and Daughter pageant at the National Cultural Centre on Saturday, May 11, 2019.

Winners of the senior category

Present at the event were First Lady Sandra Granger, Minister of Public Health Volda Lawrence and other special invitees. The show was produced by Ms. Ingrid Fung and Dr. Sulan Fung.

Under the theme, “The Supa of Love”, 44 contestants graced the stage in their beautifully-designed outfits, placing great emphasis on the bond between a mother and daughter. This year’s pageant was divided into three categories: Junior, Middle and Senior.

The crowd went wild as the pairs in the junior segment came decked out in their dresses, which portrayed both culture and elegance. The participants included: Karen McAllister and Hamakaiya; Amanda Monro and Emma; Yulisa Douglas and Gabrielle; Tramayne Britton and Unique; Patricia Herbert and Tahara; Lashaunna Singh and Zakiya, Jenel Cox-Greaves and Trinity; and Abeeka Archer and Careeka.

However, only three pairs were able to make it to the top three. In third place was Yulisa Douglas and Gabrielle, while Patricia Herbert and Tahara got second place. The winners of this category were Jenel Cox-Greaves and her lovely daughter, Trinity.

While the crowd filled the National Cultural Centre with enchantment, five pairs of fathers and daughters showcased their undying love, as they walked the stage with great confidence and charisma. It was indeed one of the most energetic parts of the night, since the fathers got to ‘take charge’ of the stage as well.

Participants in the junior category

In the middle category, the women displayed an extravagant array of chic and magnificence. Seven women and their daughters competed for the crown in this category. The contestants included: Alana Beresford and Nyah; Ilissa Jones and McCalssia; Nicole Marucs and Akeelah; Cedil Burgess and Kiara; Winetta Bayley and Shavana; Kelle Williams and Kiara; and Subbrina Marcus and Nashavia.

The winners of the middle category were Subbrina Marcus and her little angel, Nashavia, while Cedil Burgess and Kiara copped second place. Winetta Bayley and her daughter Shavana came in third.

A dance presented by the National School of Dance depicted the strength of a woman to endure all impediments, despite her femininity and her courage to stand firm and fight for what she wants. However, the most highlighted segment of the night came when the mothers and daughters of the senior category graced the National Cultural Centre with their presence. Each pair proudly displayed their long, flowing gowns designed by some of the best designers known in Guyana as they strutted gracefully across the stage.

They modeled to renditions by the Heat-wave Band led by Calvin Burnett as the entertainer for the segment. The ladies showed a great deal of poise and elegance, as the audience felt the love shared by the mothers and daughters. The women who ‘wowed’ the judges in this category were Alicia Brown-Deeges and Aleria; Lisa Nicholas and Breana; Donna Eastman and Shemeka; Colleen Roberts-Collymore and Krystal; Angaleena Odle and Quissieana; Alana Beresford and Nianna; and Ilissa Jones and Oclintia.

Winners during the serenade

Prior to the results being announced, the women were serenaded by Calvin Burnett. He presented each of them with a rose to express his appreciation for all the mothers. He also presented a rose to the First Lady, who also with great delight joined in the singing.

Amaya Fung, granddaughter of Ingrid Fung, gave her sincere gratitude to all the sponsors, and to the other persons who came out in their numbers to support the event. She also hopes that the show will even get bigger and better in the years to come.
While the crowd highly anticipated the results of the senior category, they enjoyed huge giveaways which comprised hampers, food vouchers among other items.

At last, it was time for the senior category results. The Senior Category winners of 2018 made their final walk as the results were presented. Lisa Nicholas and her daughter Breanna copped the third place position, while Ilissa Jones and Oclintia placed second. Crowned this year’s queens were Alicia Brown-Deeges and Aleria adorned in their beautiful and shining purple gowns.
