A 39-year-old fisherman was on Thursday sentenced to four years’ imprisonment after being found with a quantity of marijuana on Wednesday.

Marlon Gregory Cummings, of No. 77 Housing Scheme, East Berbice Corentyne and formerly of Samatta Point, Grove, East Bank Demerara, pleaded guilty to the charge of being in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when he appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court. He was handed a four-year sentence by Magistrate Renita Singh.

Cummings was reportedly a passenger in motorcar HD 28, which was stopped at a Police roadblock at Wellington Park, when he was observed by the police to be acting in a suspicious manner. A search of his person unearthed a plastic bag containing the stems, seeds and leaves of what is believed to be cannabis. He was promptly detained, and when the substance was weighed in his presence, it amounted to 345 grammes.
